More Property Taxes to Come? WILL Informs Wisconsin Property Taxpayers About Upcoming Referenda

WILL is providing a useful tool to inform voters about how the upcoming school referenda questions on the November ballot can affect their bottom line. WILL’s calculator was developed with data from local school districts via information available online and open records requests. Gathering that data also showcased some of the shortfalls in accountability and transparency that exist at the local level related to ballot referenda.

Parents Fight MPS to Protect their Children in School, Demand District Follows the Law

The Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty has filed a lawsuit seeking a writ of mandamus on behalf of several parents in the Milwaukee Public School District. This civil action seeks to hold the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, which oversees MPS, accountable for failing to provide the number of school resource officers state law requires in order to protect MPS schools and students.

Gaming the System: Wisconsin’s Forward Exam Scores Now Useless

Today, Wisconsin’s DPI released the 2023-24 Forward Exam scores for schools across Wisconsin. In the past, WILL has referred to these scores–and the report card built from them–as creating a “Lake Wobegone” effect where everyone is above average.

Along with casting votes for President and US Senator, Wisconsin voters across the state will have school referenda to consider. These referenda ask voters’ permission to issue debt for something specific or to exceed the annual revenue limits set by state law, in either case by increasing voters’ property taxes.
