Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty v. Milwaukee Public Schools

Type of Case: Open Records

Court: Milwaukee County Circuit Court

Case Number: 14-CV-973

Filed On: February 4, 2014

Current Status: MPS turned over the records immediately after the lawsuit was filed

The Milwaukee Public School district is notoriously bad at responding to open records request. The district, which has a $1,000,000,00+ budget and is the second-largest government entity in the state after the State itself, has only one person handling record requests on a part-time basis. When MPS was unreasonably delaying a request we had made for records surrounding the shady deal to turn the former Malcolm X Academy over to a private developer, we sued them, and they turned over the records before even being served with the summons and complaint.
